Description

Generic Name: Hydrocortisone
Brand Name: Cortizone-10, Locoid, mild corticosteroid creams
Drug Class: Low-potency topical corticosteroid

Indications

  • Relief of skin inflammation and itching associated with:
    • Eczema
    • Dermatitis (atopic, contact, seborrheic)
    • Psoriasis (mild cases)
    • Insect bites or stings
    • Allergic skin reactions
    • Rash from soaps, detergents, or cosmetics
    • Anal or genital itching (in some formulations)
Mechanism of Action
  • Acts locally to suppress inflammation, redness, swelling, and itching
  • Inhibits inflammatory cytokines and reduces capillary permeability
  • Vasoconstrictive effect helps reduce localized swelling and irritation
Dosage and Administration
  • Form: Cream (1%), 30 grams
  • Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1–2 times daily
  • Gently rub in; wash hands after use
  • For external use only
  • Do not use on open wounds or broken skin unless directed
  • Duration: Use short-term; avoid continuous use >7 days without supervision
Side Effects
  • Common:
    • Mild burning or stinging at application site
    • Dryness, irritation, or peeling
    • Skin thinning
  • Rare but Serious:
    • Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, itching)
    • Perioral dermatitis
    • Secondary skin infections
    • Systemic absorption
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to hydrocortisone or formulation ingredients
  • Untreated skin infections
  • Rosacea or acne vulgaris
  • Use in the eyes or on mucous membranes

  • Avoid prolonged use, especially on the face or in skin folds
  • Not recommended for children under 2 years without medical advice
  • Occlusive dressings may increase absorption and side effects
  • Discontinue if condition worsens or no improvement in 7 days
  • Pregnancy: Likely safe in small amounts and short-term use
  • Breastfeeding: Avoid application to nipple area

Drug Interactions

  • No significant systemic interactions when used topically as directed
  • Avoid combining with other topical steroids unless directed
