Indications
Prostate Cancer:
- Used in combination with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogues for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
- Also used as monotherapy in some localized or locally advanced prostate cancers.

Bicalutamide works by:
- Slowing or stopping the progression of the disease.
- Binding to androgen receptors on prostate cancer cells.
- Blocking the action of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, which fuel the growth of prostate cancer.
- Form: Film-coated oral tablets
- Dose: 50 mg once daily
- Administration:
- Can be taken with or without food.
- Should be started at the same time as LHRH analog treatment in combination therapy.
- Duration: As prescribed by an oncologist, often long-term.
- Common:
- Breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia)
- Hot flashes
- Nausea, constipation
- Fatigue
- Increased liver enzymes
- Serious (rare):
- Liver toxicity (hepatitis, jaundice)
- Interstitial lung disease (rare respiratory side effects)
- Cardiac disorders in patients with pre-existing heart disease
- Depression or mood changes
- Women and children (Bicalutamide is only indicated for male patients)
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Hypersensitivity to bicalutamide or any excipients
- Concurrent use with terfenadine, astemizole, or cisapride (due to risk of QT prolongation)

Warnings and Precautions:
- Liver Function: Monitor liver enzymes regularly; discontinue if severe abnormalities occur.
- Diabetes: May affect glucose tolerance when used with LHRH analogues.
- Heart Disease: Caution in patients with cardiac conditions.
- Fertility: Can impair male fertility during and after treatment.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Not for use in women.
Drug Interactions:
- Warfarin: May enhance anticoagulant effects — monitor INR closely.
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors/Inducers: May affect plasma levels of bicalutamide.
- Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus: May increase levels and toxicity.
