Drug Class: Imidazole antifungal

Indications

  • Cutaneous fungal infections including:
    • Tinea corporis (ringworm)
    • Tinea cruris (jock itch)
    • Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
    • Tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor)
    • Cutaneous candidiasis
    • Seborrheic dermatitis (fungal-related skin inflammation)
Mechanism of Action
  • Inhibits fungal cell membrane synthesis by blocking the enzyme 14α-demethylase
  • Leads to disruption of ergosterol production, essential for fungal cell membrane integrity
  • Fungistatic or fungicidal depending on concentration and organism
Dosage and Administration
  • Form: Topical cream 2%, 30 g
  • Apply once or twice daily to clean, dry affected area
  • Duration:
    • Dermatophyte infections: 2–4 weeks
    • Seborrheic dermatitis: Typically 2–4 weeks or as prescribed
    • Tinea versicolor: Up to 2 weeks
  • Continue treatment for several days after symptoms resolve to prevent recurrence
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes
Side Effects
  • Common:
    • Mild burning or stinging at application site
    • Itching
    • Redness or irritation
    • Dry skin or peeling
  • Less Common:
    • Contact dermatitis
    • Rash or skin discoloration
    • Local allergic reactions
  • Rare but Serious:
    • Hypersensitivity reaction
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to ketoconazole or any ingredient in the formulation
  • Not for ophthalmic, oral, or vaginal use

  • Not recommended for use under occlusive dressings unless directed by a physician
  • Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision
  • Pregnancy: Category C
  • Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe when used topically and not applied to breast area
