Indications
- Questran is used for:
- Treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and its complications (eg, myocardial infarction)
- Hypercholesterolemia: Reduces elevated blood cholesterol levels
- Partial obstruction of the bile ducts (to relieve itching)
- Adjunct therapy in bile duct-related liver conditions and dietary cholesterol management

- Cholestyramine resin binds bile acids in the intestine, forming insoluble complexes that are excreted in feces. This:
- Prevents reabsorption of bile acids
- Stimulates liver conversion of cholesterol to bile acids
- Lowers serum cholesterol
- Aids in bile elimination in obstructive conditions
- Form: Powder (oral suspension)
- Strength: 4 g Cholestyramine resin per sachet
- Dosage: As prescribed by a physician; usually taken 1–2 times daily
- Administration: Dissolve in water or non-carbonated beverage and drink immediately after mixing
- Common:
- Flatulence
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Heartburn
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort
- Serious (rare):
- Steatorrhea
- Pancreatitis exacerbation
- GI bleeding (especially in ulcer patients)
- Skin rashes or irritation
- Do not use Questran if you have:
- Complete bile duct obstruction
- Phenylketonuria (PKU)
- Known hypersensitivity to cholestyramine or formulation ingredients
- Pregnancy or lactation (unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider)

Warnings and Precautions:
- Vitamin Deficiencies: Long-term use may reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K); supplementation may be required.
- Gastrointestinal Disorders: Use with caution in patients with chronic constipation, hemorrhoids, or a history of gastrointestinal disease.
- Phenylketonuria (PKU): Some formulations may contain phenylalanine.
- Fluid Intake: Adequate hydration is important to prevent constipation and fecal impaction.
- Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy in children have not been established without medical supervision.
Drug Interactions:
- Cholestyramine may interfere with the absorption of:
- Thyroid hormones (eg, levothyroxine)
- Oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
- Diuretics (eg, furosemide)
- Antibiotics (eg, tetracycline, penicillin G)
- Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
- Other medications: Administer other oral drugs at least 1 hour before or 4–6 hours after taking Questran to avoid interaction.
