Indications
Ursofalk contains ursodeoxycholic acid , a naturally occurring bile acid, and is used for:
- Dissolving cholesterol gallstones (non-calcified, ≤15 mm, in functioning gallbladder)
- Treatment of bile reflux gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining due to bile reflux)
- Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) in non-decompensated cases
- Liver disorders due to cystic fibrosis in children aged 6–18 years
- Ursodeoxycholic acid works by:
- Reducing cholesterol saturation in bile
- Stabilizing liver cell membranes
- Promoting bile flow and protecting liver function
- Gradually dissolving non-calcified cholesterol stones
- Gallstone Dissolution: ~10 mg/kg/day, based on body weight (2–5 capsules daily). Duration: 6–24 months
- Biliary Reflux Gastritis: 1 capsule daily at bedtime with water. Duration: 10–14 days
- PBC Treatment: Initially 3 divided doses/day, later switched to once-daily dosing if liver function improves
- Regular check-ups (eg, ultrasound) are recommended to monitor treatment progress and gallstone calcification.
- Common:
- Soft stools or diarrhea
- Nausea
- Serious (rare):
- Calcification of gallstones
- Abdominal pain
- Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST)
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling)
Do not use Ursofalk if:
- You are allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid or other bile acids
- You have acute gallbladder or bile duct inflammation
- You have a bile duct blockage (obstructed cystic/biliary ducts)

- Regular monitoring of liver function and gallstone condition is essential
- Stop treatment if gallstone calcification develops
- Not recommended in advanced cirrhosis or complete biliary obstruction
- Consult your doctor before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding
Drug Interactions:
- Cholestyramine, colestipol , or antacids with aluminum may reduce absorption of Ursofalk
- May alter absorption of cyclosporine , ciprofloxacin , or dapsone
- Avoid concurrent use with estrogens or oral contraceptives (they increase biliary cholesterol)
