Indications

Ursofalk contains ursodeoxycholic acid , a naturally occurring bile acid, and is used for:

  • Dissolving cholesterol gallstones (non-calcified, ≤15 mm, in functioning gallbladder)
  • Treatment of bile reflux gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining due to bile reflux)
  • Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) in non-decompensated cases
  • Liver disorders due to cystic fibrosis in children aged 6–18 years
Mechanism of Action
  • Ursodeoxycholic acid works by:
    • Reducing cholesterol saturation in bile
    • Stabilizing liver cell membranes
    • Promoting bile flow and protecting liver function
    • Gradually dissolving non-calcified cholesterol stones
Dosage and Administration
  • Gallstone Dissolution: ~10 mg/kg/day, based on body weight (2–5 capsules daily). Duration: 6–24 months
  • Biliary Reflux Gastritis: 1 capsule daily at bedtime with water. Duration: 10–14 days
  • PBC Treatment: Initially 3 divided doses/day, later switched to once-daily dosing if liver function improves
    • Regular check-ups (eg, ultrasound) are recommended to monitor treatment progress and gallstone calcification.
Side Effects
  • Common:
    • Soft stools or diarrhea
    • Nausea
  • Serious (rare):
    • Calcification of gallstones
    • Abdominal pain
    • Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST)
    • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling)
Contraindications

Do not use Ursofalk if:

  • You are allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid or other bile acids
  • You have acute gallbladder or bile duct inflammation
  • You have a bile duct blockage (obstructed cystic/biliary ducts)

Information

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Regular monitoring of liver function and gallstone condition is essential
  • Stop treatment if gallstone calcification develops
  • Not recommended in advanced cirrhosis or complete biliary obstruction
  • Consult your doctor before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding

Drug Interactions:

  • Cholestyramine, colestipol , or antacids with aluminum may reduce absorption of Ursofalk
  • May alter absorption of cyclosporine , ciprofloxacin , or dapsone
  • Avoid concurrent use with estrogens or oral contraceptives (they increase biliary cholesterol)
