Indications

  • Musculoskeletal Pain: Relief of localized pain and inflammation in joints, tendons, muscles, and ligaments.
  • Osteoarthritis: Effective for symptom relief in superficial joints like knees or fingers.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Sprains, strains, and bruises.
  • Back Pain and Neck Stiffness: Reduces inflammation and associated pain.
Mechanism of Action
  • Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that:
    • Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins.
    • Reduces inflammation, swelling, and pain in the affected area.
    • Provides localized relief when applied to the skin, minimizing systemic absorption.
Dosage and Administration
  • Form: Topical foam (cutaneous use only)
  • Application:
    • Apply a small amount of foam to the affected area 2–4 times daily.
    • Massage gently into the skin.
    • Wash hands after application unless treating the hands.
  • Duration: Use for up to 7–14 days unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider.
Side Effects
  • Common:
    • Skin irritation, redness, itching, or dryness at the site of application
    • Mild burning or tingling sensation
  • Serious (rare):
    • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
    • Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight)
    • Liver enzyme changes (rare with topical use)
Contraindications
  • Known allergy to diclofenac, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
  • Broken, infected, or eczematous skin
  • Third trimester of pregnancy
  • Children under 14 years of age (unless advised by a doctor)
  • History of asthma or allergic reactions triggered by NSAIDs

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or tanning beds on treated area.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or mucous membranes.

Drug Interactions:

  • Other NSAIDs: Increased risk of side effects if used in combination.
  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): Risk of enhanced bleeding if absorbed systemically.
